One month ago tomorrow, on August 25, 2008, I had oral surgery in the back right side of my mouth. I was a little nervous, but who isn't before surgery? As I sat in the waiting room I took out a card I always keep with me to give me comfort when I'm nervous or scared.
Jeremiah 29:11 "For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."
I still felt a little nervous but I knew in my heart everything was going to be
ok.
The surgery was a success without any problems.....so I thought! I was numb for quite awhile and to be honest that made me happy. I didn't have to worry about feeling the pain from surgery. I kept waiting for the numbness to wear off but it never did. When I went to bed that night I was a little concerned because my tongue was numb on the right side from the tip of my tongue all the way down my throat.
I received a call from my surgeon, he asked how I was doing. I told him about the numbness, but he was not the least bit concerned. He said it may take a few days but the feeling will come back. I waited a few days but continued to get worse. Not only did I feel numb, I now had the feeling as if my tongue was burnt from scalding water. Progressively it got worse to varying degrees of a burning feeling to a freezing feeling. At times the right side of my face would have a Bells Palsy feeling. Talking would only exacerbate the pain and caused me much frustration.
I called the surgeon again, I was assured by his nurse that this is normal. It is not common but it does happen in some patients and it could go on for 3 months! Yikes!!! I was really struggling with that idea.
Outside of the pain I was getting weak because I couldn't eat and drinking just magnified the problem. Another problem is I need a root canal on the other side of my mouth, so when I do try to eat on that side I am in pain from that tooth! It would be great to just go and get the root canal done so I can at least chew on that side, but after all that I have read online about oral injections and my own experiences I am terrified to say the least!
I did quite a bit of surfing forums to see if I could glean any insight as to what to expect. I could not believe how many people were affected by this. It horrified to me to read that some people have had this condition for years. I learned that somehow either by the injection or the trauma of surgery my lingual nerve was injured. Misery loves company and as I read the posts I began to feel some sense of relief knowing I was not the only one in the world this happened to. As time went on, I realized that reading the posts began to instill more fear. I wasn't getting worse but I certainly was not getting any better. I just kept feeling like I was getting weaker and weaker.
I had a few things before the surgery that were pressing on my mind. These things were beginning to cause me more grief because I was feeling so bad. I felt I had been walked on, hurt and disrespected. It seemed there was no way out of my harsh feelings I had toward these problems. As my pain worsened my heart hardened. As my heart hardened my walk with God was being tested. I also felt like God forgot about me. Everyday I kept thinking about reading the Jeremiah card and how I felt that God allowed harm to happen to me!
I prayed a lot more and searched for the answers as to why am I going through this excruciating pain. I grew up thinking that if I did something bad, God was going to let bad things happen. Irrational I know, but that is how I thought. As I got older I realized that wasn't true. I do however believe if we are a child of His, He will do what He has to do to get our attention. Needless to say He had my full attention!
I cried everyday those first 3 and a half weeks because my mouth hurt so bad. I was angry, sad, frustrated and felt abandoned. My comforting scripture no longer gave me comfort. My faith was truly being tested. All the things that I was so hurt over before the surgery began to haunt me. It seemed as if they grew more hurtful every day.
Last Friday I came completely unglued. The pain was wearing me out and depression was beginning to set in. I knew I had to get a hold of this and get a plan. I also knew this was something I could not do by myself. I did what I knew I had to do. First I opened my bible and found the Jeremiah scripture and read the verses behind it and was amazed with what I read:
Jeremiah 29:13-14
Then you will call upon Me and come and pray to Me and I will listen to you. And you will seek Me, and find me when you search for Me with all your heart. I will be found by you says the Lord and I will bring you back from your captivity.
Then I found a person of great faith whom I trust completely and unloaded everything that was bothering me. I received council that I wasn't sure I could be able to do but I was sure going to give it a shot. The highlights of what I took from our talk is: God loves even the people who hurt us. He does not like it when they hurt us but he also doesn't like it when we constantly dwell on those hurts. Forgiveness is a gift I give myself and forgiveness is releasing. Even if I was having a hard time forgiving I needed to tell God I was releasing those thoughts and hurts to Him so that forgiveness could come.
This past summer I had read a verse of scripture that just seemed to get stuck in my head and I couldn't get it out of my mind. Sadly the verse just stayed in my mind but never made it to my heart.
Psalm 19:14
May the the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight O Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer.
It wasn't until Sunday at church when the Pastor said something that tied everything together. The message was "Jonah The Man Who Ran."
This is what I learned: Jonah didn't want anything to do with the people because he had prejudices against them. He simply did not like them because of what he knew about them. They were people who did bad things but God still loved them. Jonah had a job to do but he let his prejudices get in the way, he ran from God instead of doing the right thing. God got his attention and just like with Jonah he will do whatever it takes to get our attention. He will use his Word (scripture), other people, circumstances and yes sometimes even pain to get our attention.
As I wrapped everything together in my mind I realized the verse from Psalms was a warning. That was warning #1. I have to admit the meditation of my heart was definitely not pleasing to God. The hurts caused by others calloused my heart and I let it happen. That is why that scripture was would not leave my mind. I had confided in two of my most favorite people on this earth about what was bothering me and they both gave me the same advise, give it to God and let it go, warning #2. In a sick way I didn't want to, I guess I felt like as long as I was hanging on to it somehow it would hurt them back. We all know that is not true but I wouldn't let it go. I would hear things through sermons on the radio that had messages pertaining to the exact thing that hurt me but again I wouldn't let it go, warning #3. I guess God had to get his megaphone out and let me know through the nightmare from my surgery. I will never know this side of heaven whether or not I am on track or not, but everything sure lined out that way.
The blessings that came out of this nightmare are:
#1 My walk with God is being restored.
#2 I am learning very slowly to release the things that have been bothering me for so long.
#3 I have lost almost 10 lbs.
#4 My diet is a much healthier one.
#5 All of my stomach issues have been resolved.
#6 I believe I can have more compassion with those who suffer with chronic pain.
#7 The most important one! I have not been abandoned by God, nor have I been harmed by Him, but quite the opposite. I now know He has been trying to get
my attention for a long time! He doesn't want the seeds of bitterness to grow in my heart. He wants
only the best for me. He wants me to prosper in His way not by ways which I consider prospering.
I still have the numbness in my mouth along with the feeling of acid being poured on the right side of my tongue. Yesterday was a good day, I could tell there was a very very slight change in the feeling in the right direction. Talking still causes me a lot of pain and I am still on a liquid diet. I did however get the courage to call the dentist to perform the root canal on the left side of my mouth. As I seek God with all my heart I know I will be protected and healed. This time I will not just read words off of a card I will truly pray with all my heart! I had the chance to talk to 2 people who experienced the same thing. One of them took 6 months before the numbness and pain subsided. It is one year since her surgery and occasionally has pain in her jaw. The other girl I talked to said that her tongue is still numb in the back but the pain is gone completely. She only feels the numbness in the back of her tongue when she thinks about it.
I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. My blessings far out weigh my nightmare.
